It's called a digi-cassette, broz. That's right, your favorite Italian dad (is he Italian?) Matt Mondanile (Real Estate, Ducktails) has presented us with some new musical muscle. It's in support of a tour with his best bro and fellow enigmatic czar, James Ferraro. I saw Ferraro open for Mac Demarco, and his 40 minute set of digital bleeps and bloops felt like more of an art performance than a heartfelt set. But that's what these guys do ~ present satirical art that usually comments on the irony of pop culture and/or the consumption of worthless goods. Yay!
Ducktails' evolution from experimental compositions to psychedelic jazz to intricate pop is something to behold. Luckily, this cassette of new and old recordings falls into the grey area of all that. There's even a loose version of "Heaven's Room" from his intricate pop album (and most recent), St. Catherine. The number I chose to highlight, "Don't Want To Let You Know" is some of the hardest white boy funk I've heard (not white boy funk here). Yeah, it's funk...neurotic funk – maybe disco, but it's done by a white guy who adores golden retrievers and keeps a disheveled appearance with crooked glasses – hence the neuroticism? The whole tape is worth digging into, so I suggest you cop it (click link below) and support the broz. Have a nice day :)!
